We had another busy week of incorporating yet another element of technology to our learning--Google Classroom! We launched this nifty program from Google. The second graders are doing such a great job responding to a writing prompt, posting their thoughts, and reading each other's responses. We are getting techie!
Thank you:
*To our in and out of classroom volunteers! Your assistance is so appreciated!
*To our wonderful room moms, Bao (Dylan's mom) and Michelle (Taylor's mom), for their leadership in organizing our Fall Festival Volunteer Sign up (click here) and Fall Basket Sign up (Click here).
*To Mrs. Kristie, one of our yard duty teachers, who we say farewell to as she embarks on a new career path.
Curriculum Highlights:
*Reading/Language Arts--> We are beginning our study of Folk Tales and Fairy Tales. We read Lon Po Po, a Chinese version of Little Red Riding Hood, and we took an AR quiz on it. We also learned how to access Storyline Online and are practicing "Listen to Reading" as well as "Work on Writing" during our Daily 5 Time.
*Writing--> We have Pen Pals!! A 2nd grade class from a neighboring school has begun writing to us. We are very excited to practice our friendly letter writing with peers from our community. [We reviewed being safe, respectful, and responsible letter writers and the importance of not giving out private info (just like we wouldn't as digital citizens).] We also wrote thank you/farewell letters to Mrs. Kristie.
*Math--> We have begun Chapter 2 on patterns and skip counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s with an understanding that recognizing equal groups helps us in repeated addition, and, in turn, multiplication.
*Science-->We have wrapped up our unit on Matter with a study of Oobleck and will begin our Earth Sciences unit on Landforms when we return from break.
*Social Studies-->We have been discussing September's Core Value of Respect and what that looks like and sounds like in our school day. We touched upon October's Core Value of Excellence which we will continue to emphasize upon return. We also talked about Perseverance and tied that in to an autobiographical story we read about Mia Hamm.
Wish List:
*Prize box items
*Lots of home-made play dough intended for our next Science unit on Landforms (students will be creating models).Click here for a suggested recipe. Click here to sign up to make play dough over the October Break!(:
Save the Date:

2nd Grade Quote of the Week:
We are taking the Spelling Test and I come to the word "we." I say to the students, "Number eight is 'we.' 'We' 2nd graders are safe, respectful, and responsible." "...and cute!" pipes in an anonymous voice who I suspect is Taylor's. I ask, "Who just said that?" Crickets.
They are pretty cute (and quite loyal to each other, to boot)!
