Hi 2nd Grade Explorer Families,
We are in another Assessment Window, with NWEA testing Monday (Math) and Wednesday (Language) of this week. Thanks for your support in ensuring good rest and breakfasts! Students persevered through Friday's NWEA Reading Test. So proud of them!
Thank you for supporting your child in completing their Road of Life projects that they returned last Friday, 1.6.17. They turned out great! We enjoyed gallery walking at the end of Friday to appreciate each one! They were so unique and special in their own ways! How creative are they! For those unable to turn in theirs Friday, please return tomorrow or ASAP. Thank you!
Progress Reports will be coming out this Friday; please be on the lookout for them in blue folders.
Curriculum Highlights: We brainstormed several New Year's Resollutions and charted them on our Think Boards. We finished our Endangered Animals persuasive paragraphs on Google docs and learned how to insert a picture and share it with our teacher and colleagues. We learned about triple digit subtraction with regrouping and reviewed addition with regrouping. We talked about maps and globes and the elements on them and why they are important, thus starting our map unit. We enjoyed our classmates' Road of Life Maps!
Other Shool Announcements:
Canned Food Drive continues through January 20th
Westlake Charter is running a Canned Food Drive from Jan 3rd-Jan 20th, 2017. All donations will be delivered to Joey's Food Locker, which supports local Natomas families. Items of greatest need are: macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, jelly, canned vegetables, canned tuna, and canned chicken meat (no glass containers please). Please bring items to our classroom. Thank you to those families who have already donated!
Lottery Outreach:
Click HERE to sign up. We're looking for volunteers for January 14th and 15th from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm who can help staff a booth at the WalMart on Truxel Road. You will be providing enrollment information to prospective parents, and maybe answering some questions about our school. If you're interested, please complete the form and the Westlake team will be in touch with additional details. Thank you, and as always, let's explore!
Gate Testing:
Our annual administration of the NNAT3 Gate Test will be given the week of March 13th. If you would like to have your child sit for the Gate test, please complete this Parent Referral form and submit it to me via your child's blue folder; I will complete the teacher referral form to accompany it and submit both together prior to the deadline below.
Both teacher and parent referral forms must be received by 4:00pm on Friday, February 3rd to the WCS office in order to qualify for testing this year.
If you have any questions regarding the GATE process, please email Mrs. Eick ([email protected]) or me. Thank you!
One quick note--my daughter will be a sailor returning from the 4th grade Age of Sail trip late Tuesday morning, so I will have a guest teacher in the afternoon. I know the 2nd graders will be respectful, responsible, and safe in my absence. That's all for now!
Have a great week!
Mrs. A
2nd Grade Quote of the Week: This week, we revised "Quiet Time" after lunch to be "Catch-up (on classwork)/Quiet Reading Time." I told the 2nd graders, in an effort to get more work and reading done in the day and to prepare for having 3rd grade stamina, this was a necessary change. They could still rest momentarily in between catching up or quiet reading, but it needed it be a mindful decision on their part because I expect to see more independent reading from them all. After a few days of this mindshift, Amish sighed, "Mrs. A, it sure is hard to be a third grader!"
