Hi 2nd Grade Families!
Welcome to our beautiful new campus and our 2nd grade community! It was wonderful to see many of you at Back to School Night last Wednesday. Thank you for coming! Click here if you would like to view our BTSN slideshow.
First of all, I would like to express how much I am looking forward to working with you and your children this year. This is a very bright bunch of curious thinkers and doers! They've got great chemistry already and that only means great learning ahead! I feel lucky to be their teacher!
This link can also be found on the Westlake Website and the bottom of my emails. This is a great place to go for our newsletters, back to school info, and enrichment resources. Please note that I am still in the midst of updating the resources page to reflect this years' class roster and so some of the links may not work just yet. I will keep you posted when all is good to go!
Parent-Teacher Blue Communication Folders
These plastic blue folders went home Friday and you can expect them to go home every Friday (or sooner if there is an urgent message in there. I will alert you by email if that is the case.) Please return them Monday or Tuesday of the following week.
These past few days have been focused on building community through whole group, trio, and partner games and activities. We brainstormed rules for the class which can be summed up by our Community Agreements:
1) Be Respectful; 2) Solve Problems; and 3) Make Good Decisions. [Please use these words at home to help reinforce expectations at school.]
We read about "Dex: The Heart of A Hero" and created our Hopes and Dreams for 2nd grade. These will remain on display in our classroom to remind us what we are working for. We also talked about having a growth mindset and the words we can say to ourselves when the going gets tough. Click here to learn more about growth mindset for parents.
We met with our specialty teachers this week. This year, specialties are organized according to 2nd grade cohorts, not classes. This allows the 2nd graders to get to know other friends from other classes. Click here to view your child's cohort color and specialty schedule. Specialties meet at 9:00 -10:00 am daily except for Wednesday. Hard copy reminders will come your way in Friday's blue folder.
We took a few Beginning of the Year assessments and will continue them next week. We practiced Writing Workshop, a few of our Daily 5 Rotations, and some Math Workshop choices. They are doing great!
If you would like to volunteer in some way, please email me and we will make it happen! Thank you!
Families Today & in the Past
We will be kicking off this great unit with a special Grandparents Day! This will be on Wednesday, September 13th from 8:30 - 10:00 am. We invite our grandparents (or other relative or family friend) to spend a special morning together. We would like them to share stories and artifacts from their childhood and enjoy some light refreshments with us. Please sign up here.
I would also love to have on display an unframed 4x6 picture of each student with their family that we can display for the year in our classroom. These will be returned at the end of the year. I will be sending home hard copy reminders in Friday's blue folder.
That's all for now! Have a wonderful weekend and week!
