Hi, 2nd Grade Explorer Families,
Many thanks to those who were able to make it to Back to School Night on Wednesday! I appreciate your time and energy! For those unable to attend or for those who would like to review the BTSN info, click here. I have also placed BTSN handouts in blue folders. Email me if you have any questions!
Homework:
Parents, remember to bring in a 4" x 6" family photo to be showcased beneath our Hopes and Dreams bulletin board for the year and returned in June. Also, don't forget to read the Growth Mindset papers and do the worksheet with your child.
As mentioned at BTSN, there are no hard copy homework packets in 2nd grade. I would like the 2nd graders to dedicate 15-30 minutes daily to some form of reading [read to self, read with someone, choral reading, Raz Kids, Storyline Online, etc.]. Let me know if you need support on this in any way! Thank you!
Curriculum Highlights:
Language: We have been practicing our Writing Workshop and Reading Workshop. Our stamina for independent work is coming along! We took a Small Moment Narrative Writing Pre-test and I began to teach the 2nd grade writers the criteria for a Small Moment Narrative. We continue to practice the pre-writing strategies of quick draws, bullet lists, and concept maps.
Math: We reviewed subtraction vocabulary words and concept mapped various addition strategies we use. We practiced Math Workshop rotations.
Technology: We reviewed what it means to be a responsible digital citizen and practiced our 2nd grade techspectations. We logged onto our accounts via our emails and passwords! We placed our face on our chrome books and practiced some online Freckle Math and Fact Dash. I showed the 2nd graders how to access our online resources from home. Here are the steps to practice with your child:
1. Get on Westlake Charter School Website (westlakecharter.com)
2. Select "Teachers"
3. Select "2nd Grade"
4. Select "Class Website" after my name
5. Select the "Resources" tab on our website
6. Choose links from Language Arts and Math to practice!
[Freckle class code is: Acqui9]
Good luck! Let me know if you have any questions!
Buddies: We met our 5th Grade Big Buddies in Ms. Brunnmeier's class! We interviewed each other and did some partner spelling work together! We are looking forward to our next buddy time with them!
NWEA testing on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday!
At 10:30 am on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, I will be administering the NWEA online tests of Math, Reading, and Language respectfully. Please make sure your child is well rested, breakfasted, and has a healthy snack. Thanks for your support!
School-wide News:
Field Lessons and School Supplies: We are so excited to launch our new donations website! Click HERE to donate toward our school supply and field lesson campaigns.
School Supplies: Families, this year each grade level has purchased all the school supplies that your students will need for the entire year. We get a great discount as a school, so we like to purchase everything in advance. We ask that if you would like to help out with school supplies, simply make a $25 donation to our School Supplies Campaign and we will take care of the rest.
Field Lessons: Speaking of donations, each grade level is planning some incredible explorations this year! You can see a list of Field Lessons for each grade level. The school has already paid for these trips, and everyone is going whether we meet our donations goal or not, however, we have set our grade level Field Lessons Donation Goal and placed it on the website to help support these trips. You can help by donating to our Field Lessons Campaign on our donations website - the new website will even break up your donation into smaller monthly donations for you with just the click of a button.

That's all for now! Have a great week!
