| Hi Explorer Families, Last week at this time we thought we had 3 grandparents joining us for Grandparents Day--but when the big event came, we welcomed 16 from our class alone! It was so great to have these honored guests Wednesday morning! They participated in our Morning Meeting, listened to Allen Say's "Grandfather's Journey," and let us serenade them with the Beatles' "When I'm 64." They also answered partner-generated questions from 2nd grade inquiring minds. These included such questions as "What was school like when you were my age?" and "What was your favorite game you played as a kid?" Before their departure, our guests enjoyed refreshments and mingling with other 2nd grade grandparents in our grade level flex space. It was a joy to have them; every day should be grandparents day! Many thanks to Dillon's, Ethan's, and Cameron's families for the delicious refreshments for our senior guests! All was consumed which made clean up very easy! Thank you also to Liliana's family for the lovely centerpieces! Progress Reports: First Trimester Progress reports will be out in blue folders this Friday. (We are half way towards report cards and conferences.) Please sign and return one copy. Curriculum Highlights: We started Reading and completed Math Workshop Rotations this week! Thank you to Rayyan's mom for helping us in our first Reading Workshop! Students did a fairly good job being quietly independent and productive and minding our Community Agreements of being respectful, solving problems, and making good decisions. Dates to Remember: Kinder-5th Grade Request for Chili Cook-off - Sept. 20th @ 6:00 pm This year we are inviting our Kindergarten through fifth-grade families to join the event by contributing dessert and drink donations. We would love to see at least 5 desserts and 5 drinks donated per grade level. Desserts are best donated in individual wrappings (ie brownies versus a whole cake). Drinks are best as 2 liters or 12 oz cans. Click here to sign up. Picture Day - October 5th: We will have our first K-8 picture day on Thursday, October 5th. This will be a uniform picture day, not free dress. Schedule and picture packets coming soon. Fall Break - October 9th - October 13th There will be no school on Monday, October 9 through Friday, October 13th for Fall Break. The office will be closed to the public, and we are encouraging all staff who are not opening BASE to please take the week off. BASE will be open from 7am to 6pm during Fall Break. 2017 Fall Festival - October 21st: The Fall Festival Committee is working hard to prepare another great community event! I am still looking for a room parent or co-parents that can organize our class families to assemble a themed basket for the auction. Click HERE for Auction Basket Instructions. Please email me if you are interested in taking on this leadership role for our class community.(: 2nd Grade Quote of the Week: Conrad and Davin are having a conversation about a toy that Conrad has and Davin wishes he had. Davin says he has tried asking his parents, but they say, "no." Conrad listens attentively and remarks, "Did you try 'the puppy dog eyes'?" Have a great week! Mrs. A |
