I'd like to dedicate this newsletter to the great Dr. King who is the epitome of a Person Who Made A Difference, our new thematic unit we launched this past week!
A great thank you to him and to all of the difference makers in history and those surrounding us today! A special shout out to Mr. Steve, Cece's stepdad, who helped review double digit subtraction with regrouping to 2nd grade mathematicians. Thank you!
Curriculum Highlights:
*NWEA--We wrapped up NWEA testing; we just have a couple students that need to finish part of their Language Test on Tuesday! I'm so proud of the growth mindset and perseverance students showed in getting through a very tough assessment week!
*Reading/Language Arts/Thematic Unit--We learned about the elements of a biography and read about Martin Luther King, Jr. and Ruby Bridges, two monumental leaders in the Civil Rights Movement. We took a writing assessment on what we learned about Dr. King.
*Math--We are reviewing double digit subtraction with regrouping. Please practice this concept as well as double digit addition with regrouping at home. I'm finding this to be an area that many of our mathematicians need more time on. Look for practice homework in blue folders for those of us in need of additional practice.
*Writing/Core Value (Being Inquisitive)--We wrote letters to our Big Buddies who returned from their overnight Age of Sail Field trip and asked them several inquisitive questions to dig deeper and learn more about what it was like to be a sailor in 1906. We also interviewed a couple of our big buddies to find out what preparing for the Living Museum (our culminating showcase for our People Who Make A Difference unit) is like.
Mark your Calendars!
*Friday, January 20th--Progress Reports go out in blue folders.
*Thursday, January 26th--2nd Grade Field Trip! Details TBA when all is confirmed.
One of many inspirational quotes from the great Dr. King:
"We shall overcome because the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice."
Washington National Cathedral, March 31, 1968.
Have a wonderful weekend!
