I'd like to wish all you amazing mothers out there a great Mother's Day weekend! Motherhood is truly a labor of love, or as I like to refer to it, "an inconvenient joy." Nothing about it is too convenient, but there's a lot of joy to be had! This newsletter is dedicated to you!
Also, I just want to thank you for all the wonderful words, wishes, cards, gifts, flowers, treats, special meals, and hugs I received this past "Teacher Appreciation" week! I am truly touched and humbled by it all! Thank you! I have great affection for this group and consider your children as unique, one-of-a kind treasures I have enjoyed and cherished and will truly miss!
Finally, I will be turning in the Field Day T-shirt money envelopes to Ms. Prokop this week. If you would like to order this year's 2nd Grade Field Day T-shirt, please return this Monday $10 cash in the designated envelope sent out last week and remember to indicate your child's t-shirt size. Please note that this is an optional expense and second graders can also wear their Westlake spirit shirt on this day as well.
Class Party:
Our hard-earned class party will be during Fun Friday Time on Friday, May 18th from 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm. Many thanks to Conrad's mom for donating the vanilla ice cream and root beer for our root beer floats experiment! Students have asked if we could have "something sweet and salty," too. If you would like to donate individually wrapped, single serve items fitting these descriptions, please email me by Thursday at noon. Something healthy like tangerines would be most welcome, too. Thanks so much!
Second Grade Family Potluck:
On Tuesday, June 12th (the day before the last day of school) - our second grade team will be hosting a Second Grade Family Potluck from11:45am - 1:00pm. Click here to sign up to bring some items to share! Bring your folding chairs, blankets, or something to sit on and relax! The potluck will be held in the Second Grade Neighborhood and food will be set up in our communal flex space. We look forward to rounding out a fantastic year with all of you!
Curriculum Highlights:
*Reading, Language Arts, Biodiversity unit--We are starting a poetry unit! We learned about cinquains and wrote one to someone special. We continue to learn about biodiversity and ecosystems and read about the Forest ecosystem and began making a pictorial input chart. We have chosen an endangered animal to research and present on our tri-fold boards. Second grade endangered animal researchers are doing a great job! We can't wait to share our findings at Open House!
*Math--We launched our Geometry unit with the Ashanti folk tale,"Anansi the Spider," noting the geometric shapes in its illustrations. Second grade mathematicians/artists then created their own spiders, incorporating as many geometric shapes in them. Check out these beauties at Open House!
