Hi 2nd Grade Families,
As we wrap up 2nd grade with assessments, meetings, celebrations, and preparations, it is truly a busy time! Perseverance is a fitting core value for this Month of May!
Curriculum Highlights:
Social Studies/Core Values: For our buddy time this week, we came up with questions with our little buddies and interviewed Ms. Prokop who epitomized Perseverance by running 31.2 miles last weekend! Click here for the breaking story!
Reading: We have started our book clubs and we are reading our chosen chapter books and meeting to discuss green light, yellow light, and red light comprehension questions. We also took our NWEA Reading Test. It was a long exercise in perseverance!
Math: We continue our 2-Dimensional and 3-Dimensional shape study and will be introducing fractions. NWEA Math test on Monday; please review IXL Math, ScootPad Math, and Fact Dash on our Resources Page to warm up our math brains!
Open House Preparations: We are wrapping up our projects to showcase at Wednesday's Open House. We can't wait to show you!
Important News:
*Field Day News from Ms. Galvan and the Field Day Committee:
As our school year comes to an end we look forward to celebrating our fantastic explorers at Field Day. We need your help to make Field Day awesome. Specifically, we are seeking 30 volunteers for the event on Wednesday, June 15th. We ask that volunteers arrive at 8:30 a.m. and plan to stay until dismissal (minimum day schedule). Most volunteers will be assisting a station as 4th grade leaders will be running the stations this year. A few parent volunteers will act as floaters to help as needed. We are also in need of a few donation items. Please use this link to sign up and help out. Thank you for all that you do to support your student and our Westlake community.
* 2nd Grade Field Day T-Shirts:
Speaking of Field Day, we would like to have 2nd grade wear special grade level T-shirts to show our spirit and solidarity on this day! Shari (Natalia's mom) in Mrs. Wilson's class, will be coordinating with our wonderful room mom, Ms. Michelle (Taylor's mom) in making this happen. T-shirts are $8.68; please send your check--payable to Shari Kantor--or money via blue folder in a sealed envelope addressed thus: "Michelle Bombarda, T-shirt money for [name of student and their T-shirt size] Mrs. A's class." I will pass it on to her. Deadline is Friday, May 27th. Please email us if you have any questions.
* Yearbooks are now on sale at westlakecharter.com! This year's book was designed and created entirely by students. The books are $20 each and our supply is limited! ORDER NOW!
* Ready, Set, Go
Phase 1 of our parking lot campaign is ready to launch on May 23rd! The focus of Phase 1 will be on student safety. 1. Let your students know where they are going after school. (BASE, walking or car pick-up)
If this changes for some reason, call the school office at (916) 567-5760
2. Pick up walkers from their line their regular dismissal time.
Car pick-up and BASE pick-up will remain the same.
* May is Bike Month continues: Students are encouraged to ride their bikes for weekly prizes.
* 2nd Grade Front Street Animal Shelter Collection: Thank you to those who have already donated items off the purple flyer that went home last week! Your advocacy and stewardship for animals in need are appreciated! Last day to donate will be Open House night on 5/25.
Mark your Calendars:

2nd Grade Quote of the Week:
Denny is working on his acrostic name poem and is stuck on what to write for "Y." We discuss some ideas and consider: "Yummy smelling?" Alexis walks by and says, "Well, maybe not right after recess, but usually, yes!"
Have a great week!
Mrs. A
