Hi 2nd Grade Families,
I'm sure you are feeling it like I am--life is getting busy! Now that school is in full swing, balancing it all can be challenging but knowing that this is a valuable chapter in our children's lives (and ours) helps me put things in perspective. Parenting, like teaching, is truly a labor of love! Thanks for all you do! Yay, us!
Thank you:
*To Alena's mom for donating her time and money to provide us with a great science station on 3 states of matter existing in perfect harmonious yummy-ness: Root beer floats! What a great way to spend a Friday afternoon!
*To Aaron's mom for her at-home help. Thanks so much for your prompt returns!
*To all for supporting your child's reading and writing development by reading with your children and responding in their Friday journals. Who would have thought you'd have 2nd grade homework at this stage of your life? Thanks for your partnership!
Please email me if you are having difficulty getting in the reading routine or if you need reading materials. I am here to support!
Curriculum Highlights:
*Science--we have been learning about the 3 states of matter (solids, liquids, and gas) and their properties. We conducted an observational experiment on 10 different liquids, noting their properties and predicting what we thought they were. Ask your explorer if they can tell you the difference between translucent and transparent.
*Daily 5--we continue to practice word work (spelling), read to someone, read to self, Raz-Kids, and Work with Teacher. This week, I pulled students one-on-one to hear them read as well.
*Math--we have started talking about subtraction and relating its strategies to addition.
*Technology--we are in the process of getting new passwords for each student; we should be up and running next week.
*Writing--we did some creative writing, inspired by the book "The Day the Crayons Quit," identifying ourselves or pretending to be a crayon character from the story. We also colored a fish template showing our own unique artistry. The fish, inspired by the book "Simon's Hook," where we are encouraged to "be a free fish," will be displayed in our class "2nd Grade Rocks" pond.
Parents Go To School Night:
Please join us for "Parents Go to School Night" on the Del Paso campus on Wednesday, September 28th from 5:15-8:00 p.m. to learn more about supporting your child's learning at WCS! You don't want to miss John Eick's keynote speech about 21st-century classroom and building design. This will be followed by fantastic staff-led sessions about topics of interest to all of our families. Our teachers will be presenting ideas for encouraging all WCS students from our littlest explorers to our middle school students! Here is a timeline for the evening:

A note from our room parents:
Hello parents,
Melinda and I will be helping Mrs. Acquisto coordinate some activities and events for our class room this year. Is that time of the year again for our first big event that needs our help, WCS Fall Festival on Saturday, October 22nd. Each class will have an opportunity to create class basket that will be auctioned off during the festival – all money received for our class basket will go directly to our class for Mrs Acquisto to use to help pay for special projects, class supplies or any essential items our class needs.
That being said, we would like to know if anyone has connections to local businesses or is able to donate big ticket items for our basket? If so, please let me know as soon as you can and we can work to create a basket THEME around things we can easily get! Once we have our theme set, We will let everyone know so others can participate on completing our basket.
Regards,
