We will be watching Charlotte's Web! If you are interested in chaperoning and have been WCS fingerprinted, please email me.
Students also have their Volume 1 Math books in them. Feel free to have students work on incomplete pages as extra practice. We will be moving on to Volume 2 Math books to complement our lessons on Measurement and Geometry.
Curriculum Highlights:
* ELA- We are in the midst of reading "Charlotte's Web" and working on comprehension questions and vocabulary related to each chapter. We are also practicing the skills of visualizing and summarizing. In Writing, we took an on-demand Informational Writing Assessment. I introduced Opinion Writing, using the acronym OREO to help us remember the elements that go into writing an opinion piece. Ask your 2nd grade writer if they remember what each letter stands for.
* Math- We wrapped up double and triple addition/subtraction with and without re-grouping. Please continue to practice at home.
* Science - We started our Earth Systems/ Landforms Unit by comparing California and South America maps and landforms and bodies of water.
* Dr. Seuss Celebration - We honored the Dr. Seuss's birthday (tomorrow) by reading "The Lorax" together and choosing up to 4 other Dr. Seuss books to read independently as well. We completed a Scholastic News article, "The Real Lorax," which explores the notion of a real monkey being the inspiration behind the Lorax.

2nd Grade Quote of the Week:
Maddox and I are talking about Benjamin Franklin and how he founded the University of Pennsylvania. I tell him my brother went to school there and I visited the campus and saw a statue of Benjamin Franklin. He asked if he could take a look at my cell phone picture of him. I replied, "Well, Maddox, they did not invent cell phones back when I visited him! So I don't have a picture of him!" To which, he replies, "Oh! That's right! Not to hurt your feelings, but you are very old!"
Have a great weekend! Looking forward to seeing you next week with your smart, honest, and observant 2nd graders!
