Hi 2nd Grade Explorer Families,
We had a great, wintry week despite that one rainy day when we did not get outdoor recess all day long! That was a tough one! But we made it!
Many thanks to:
*Alena's mom for sharing Hanukkah with us through her read aloud, her stories, and having each group play the Dreidel game! What an enriching experience for us 2nd grade citizens of the world! Thank you!
*Zackary's grandma for helping many 2nd graders catch up and persevere through their Endangered Animals research. So grateful!
*Our room moms, Apple and Melinda (Emma's and Emmy's moms), for helping me coordinate our Winter Party and to all of you for donating items and your time to it. I've decided we will not have a secret classmate gift exchange at the party (considering such variables as time, money, traditions/cultures in our classroom). Instead, we will be doing some gratitude writing (a gift to both giver and recipient, and a nod to our December Core Value).
Homework Update:
The 2nd grade teacher team met this week and we discussed homework feedback from our respective families. We decided we will continue to implement our present policy which is a minimum of 30 minutes of daily reading and regular visits to our resources page for Spelling, Reading, and Math practice. If you would like further assistance or direction to support your student, contact your student's homeroom teacher (me). Some of you mentioned you would like to see more Math coming home so you can see what support your child might need; I will strive to make this happen. Also, I will aim to add more helpful links to our resources page for dowloading and printing.
Speaking of encouraging at home reading, yesterday I sent home the "Read to Succeed" Reading Log. I encourage your child to participate--reading and recording 6 hours of reading to turn in by February 28th for a free Discovery Kingdom ticket!
Curriculum Highlights:
*Reading--we read versions of Goldilocks and the Three Bears
*Science/Technology/Writing--we wrapped up our research on Endangered Animals and began our final product
*Math--we played "Silent Partner Math Showdown" to review double digit and triple digit addition with regrouping.
*Geography--we took a pre-quiz on what we know about reading maps and globes.
