Many thanks to all who participated in the WCS International Festival last weekend! It was so great to see the diversity and community that is Westlake! (A personal thank you to the Japanese booth and the Filipino booth for their delicious food for my son and me!)
I also wanted to thank Mykah's, Chase's, Helena's, and Claudia's families for purchasing books from our Book Fair for our classroom library! Thank you for your kind support! We will enjoy them!
Homework over the Break:
While I am a big believer of working hard and playing hard, if your 2nd graders do get restless and could use some intellectual enlightenment, please read, read, read! I encourage real books from libraries and bookstores, but if it is difficult to visit them, digital alternatives such as Storyline Online, Freckle ELA, and RAZ kids found on our Resources page will do! They may also sketch and record observations of their growing bean plant (which they took home Friday) and transplant it to a bigger habitat. If they have access to a computer, they can also research and write down interesting facts about bean plants and the bean plant cycle (i.e., practice their informative writing). They can also journal about interesting small moments during their time off (i.e., practice their small moment narrative writing). Freckle Math and Fact Dash on our Resources page can also maintain their Math skills. Just some ideas to squeeze in if they need some structure....otherwise, I hope they play, bond with family and friends, rest, and enjoy being a kid!
Curriculum Highlights:
*ELA/Thematic Unit: Biodiversity - We have started our Poetry unit with writing acrostic poems. We also shared our writing and read about the layers of the Rainforest. We are enjoying our class read aloud, "Stuart Little."
*Math - We took a Performance Task on Measurement, which will go home with Progress Reports.
*Science - We learned about the Scientific Method, sketched our bean plants, and wrote down 3 observations in our Science Notebooks.

Click HERE to see which clubs are being offered for your student’s grade level and to enter your student in the lottery for a spot. If you’re interesting in chaperoning a club led by middle school students (a great way to earn volunteer hours and support the program), please email [email protected].
