Hi 2nd Grade Families!
Hope to see some of you at today's Fall Festival! It is a great time to celebrate Fall and the great community of families and staff we have here at Westlake!
Thank you:
*To all of you for volunteering, donating, and contributing to our class in the ways that you do! Special thanks to Emma's mom and Emmeline's mom for coordinating Fall volunteers and our Fall basket. Shoutouts to Zackary's grandma, Emma's mom, and Serenity's mom for their help in Daily 5 this week. Also, Aaron's mom for her at home help. Your time is so appreciated, ladies!

Olympic Triathlon: The Olympic Triathlon is a school-wide event involving students, staff, and parents. This is a fundraising event to help raise money to support programs at WCS. This year, fundraising efforts are going towards Westlake’s new facility. The fundraising kicked off with a Watch-it-Wednesday on Wednesday, October 14th. The Olympic Triathlon Event Day is on Thursday, November 10th. The Event Day is a school-wide activity where students have an opportunity to participate in events related to PE, art, and Spanish. More to come on Event Day in the coming weeks.
Love & Logic: We are hosting Love and Logic parenting classes on the Del Paso Campus starting on Tuesday, October 25th at 6:00pm. Love and Logic is a parenting philosophy that nicely pairs with the Responsive Classroom philosophy. Kristen Baisden, our Love and Logic presenter, will equip parents with tools to deal with some of the most challenging parenting situations. Click HERE for the flyer.
Red Ribbon Week: Red Ribbon Week is coming! During the week of October 24-28, I will be focusing on making healthy choices as a way of achieving our hopes and dreams.
Curriculum Highlights:
*Reading/Language Arts: We discussed the story elements in fiction (Setting, Plot, and Characters) and the notion of Main Idea and topic sentences in non-fiction. We chose a Fall Prompt to write about and read the Jack Prelutsky poem, "Tricksters," that we visualized and illustrated.
*Math: Those of us who were ready, took our Chapter 2 Math test; the others will try next week. We reviewed arrays and even/odd numbers. We will focus on regrouping next.
*Science: We have begun our Animal Advocacy unit and will be talking about what a conservationist biologist and an advocate are next week.
*Core Value: Excellence--we've been practicing showing excellence in our listening, our work, our choices, and our line. Students did an excellent job during "The Great California Shakeout"--our earthquake drill and an excellent job creating unique jack-o-lanterns to decorate our door with!
